1.Prepare the room
Make sure everything is moved so you have space to move around, there are dust sheets down to protect surfaces, and any surfaces that are close to the tiling (such as kitchen units or worktops) are given extra protection to make sure there’s no scratches or damages.
We recommend that any coving, skirting boards or other aesthetic pieces are removed to give the wall a better final look, rather than having the tiles extruding above the coving for example. If you really want either of these things, you can re-apply on top of the tiles afterwards.
Pull out any plug sockets and switches, to be re-attached once the project is complete.
2. Plan the install
Ensure you know where the tiles need to start in order to not end up with thin cuts or large mortar joints at either the top or ends and that any corner tiles fit nicely. You should also lay out all of the tools needed so everything is handy.
Open all boxes of the tiles and ensure they are mixed together for an even spread of colour variations.
3. Prepare the wall
Score and Prime the wall to prepare it for the installation, making sure that there is maximum adhesion for the adhesive and tile
4. Mix your adhesive
Mix the adhesive to a smooth paste that holds when you create peaks in the mixture.
5. Start tiling
Starting at the bottom- in the centre, or at the external corners if you need them, use an adhesive trowel to spread a cm on the wall, and apply it to each tile before pressing firmly on the wall with slight movement to make it stick nicely, and insert the required amount of spacers in between Make sure that all the tiles are curving or have their creases upwards (smiling bricks, not frowning), they are made by pushing them down into a mould, so the creases or slight misshaping in that way comes from this process.
You may wish to use a spirit level as you proceed just to check that more tumbled brick tiles are still reasonably level. Some people even use a strip of wood rather than spacers to ensure a completely straight mortar line.
6. Cut the tiles
When you reach the end of a row, you will more than likely need to cut the tile to finish that row, you’ll also need to cut to tile around sockets and switches.
7. Repeat
Continue to tile upwards as previously, with a section of adhesive applied at a time.
8. Brush off any adhesive
Once you’ve tiled the full surface, use a stiff brush to make sure there’s no adhesive left on your tiles.
9. Clear up and wait
Now you can clear away most of your items, with only the pointing mortar to apply. The adhesive needs to dry however so it’s advisable to leave it for 24 hours
10. Prepare again
Make sure you protect your surfaces from getting mortar on them with a dust sheet again, and remove all the spacers from the wall, they should come out easily, but you can use pliers to remove them if not.
11. Prepare your mortar
Mix Your Mortar together to a smooth paste that will slip off a trowel but hold its form still in the bucket. Then you can add it to your pointing gun ready to apply.
12. Add the mortar
Using the mortar gun, apply into the gaps- you may want to bear in mind what joint profile you wantas to how much you want to apply.
13. Finish the mortar
To finish the profile, use a pointing trowel and smooth out the joints as you want them.
14. Clean up
Using a stiff brush, clean any excess mortar from the brickwork before it dries, and then you can clean up the room. Do not wipe the wall in any way as you may well end up smearing mortar across the bricks. The only way to clean that off is with brick acid.
After 12-24 hours the mortar will have dried enough that you can re-fit switches and sockets. The full drying process can potentially take a week depending on the conditions. Then you need to sit back and enjoy your wall.
You can install brick slips almost anywhere, with only a few exceptions. Externally or internally- on flat surfaces.

Yes, as they’re genuine brick- The tiles can cope with the elements with no problems. The only thing to consider is how they’re fitted to the wall.
Most large projects use a cladding system, which is made up of modular frames fixed to the walls- so no adhesive is needed, the tiles just slot into those frames. There are different ones out there and some may suit your project better than others. If you think your project may need a system, contact us for further information.
If you’re just tiling a small area, however, you can still use adhesive to apply the tiles as with internal projects.
The only real requirement for surfaces is that they are flat, and can take adhesive. With existing brick or blockwork where inevitably there are uneven parts, you simply need to make sure you level that out with the adhesive.
You can’t tile onto MDF, plywood or OSB as these materials are made up of separate pieces, which could come apart with the weight of any tiles, or onto anything is itself adhered- as we cannot guarantee the adhesion. For example render, or existing tiles.
For plaster, plasterboard or cement fibreboard we recommend just lightly scoring the surface before applying the primer, this just gives a little extra grip between the wall and the adhesive, creating extra surface area in the process.
The products are perfectly suitable to surround any gas, wood or natural fires with a unit surrounding it such as a stove. The main consideration is the adhesive used- you should use a cement-based mortar.
It is possible to use brick tiles as flooring, there are a few considerations though. Firstly we wouldn’t recommend them as flooring for heavy traffic (i.e cars). They will need to be well-installed as the weight put on them could cause cracks over time. The other consideration is the texture, we’d recommend using a brick sealant to make cleaning easier, but you also need to consider the natural texture which can make for an uneven floor, however that is also what makes it look stunning.
You can install brick slips in every room in the house. The only advisory point is if you’re installing in a shower. If you want to have brick tiles in your shower unit, you have to make sure you prepare properly. As the tiles are genuine brick, they absorb moisture, and therefore you need to make sure you attach them to a cement fibreboard (which is sealed between joins) rather than plasterboard, to make sure this moisture doesn’t permeate any further. The only other factor to bear in mind with wet areas is that your brick tiles will be darker when wet than your dry sample boards.
If the brick slips are going to be installed somewhere messy such as a kitchen splashback or in a bathroom we always advise using a brick sealant after installation, to make cleaning and maintenance easier.
Our Brick slips are designed for use anywhere, the great thing with brick is that it has been tested over centuries, and exposed to the elements. The main consideration for most questions is if you need to use corner tiles or reveal tiles for your room.
